Merton Lib Dems are stepping up their campaign for a 20mph speed limit on residential roads in the area. Over 80% of residents on some roads say that they want a 20mph speed limit. However, Conservative-run Merton Council has so far rejected the idea.

Mary-Jane Jeanes is leading the campaign for a 20mph limit on local roads. She said:
“Residents should be able to have a say on the appropriate speed limit for their street. The council appears to think that they should do nothing until there is a serious accident. We should be making sure that accidents are avoided in the first place.

Locals know that cars regularly suffer minor damage, such as broken mirrors, because the roads are being used as ratruns by commuters. Parents want their children to be able to walk to school safely without the fear of speeding vehicles. The council should listen to what local people are saying and act accordingly.”

I call on Merton Council to introduce a 20mph speed limit on my road.
