Our bus services are being cut

Without any consultation, First Bus recently announced major cuts in bus services in South Gloucestershire. If South Glos Council hadn't stepped in with a minimal subsidy, some areas including Iron Acton and North Yate would have had no daytime buses at all.

Even with the subsidy other areas such as South Yate are loosing a third of their services, and journeys from Yate to Bristol will be at least 10 minutes longer because they will stop many more times along the way. The Sunday service to Cribbs Causeway is also being cancelled completely.

First Bus say that these services are not attracting enough customers, but this is hardly surprising given the extortionate levels of bus fares.

The impact of the cuts is heaviest on people who have no other means of transport, but the changes are bound to drive more people into using cars instead of buses, so increasing the congestion we already have.

We're keeping this campaign going because First review their services three or four times a year - we don't know what services will be at risk next.

Buses should be efficient and affordable, and should serve the needs of the public.

We, the undersigned, call on South Gloucestershire Council to take immediate action to restore adequate bus services for the areas affected by the First Bus cuts.

We also call on First Bus to reduce their fares to a level at which they encourage people to use public transport instead of cars.
