Seaford needs better health care

Councillor Ralph Taylor has been campaigning for Seaford patients needing intermediate care following a stay in hospital to have access to the beds at Newhaven Downs Rehabilitation Centre. At present, such patients have to go to Firwood House in Hampden Park, which is difficult to get to from Seaford, especially by public transport. “It seems crazy that a modern, purpose-built facility, just down the road in Newhaven, has been mothballed, just to save money,” he said. “We need a community hospital here in Seaford, but in the meantime Seaford patients should be able to use Newhaven Downs.”

Ralph, together with Councillors Jon Freeman and Eddie Collict, is a member of a ‘stakeholder group’ which has been set-up to plan new facilities for Seaford. “The group has been meeting regularly for over a year, and is looking to make progress in this crucial area in the near future.”

Jon Freeman has been frustrated by the lack of progress made on the issue so far. “I think we will have to call a public meeting and show the health big-wigs just how strongly Seaford feels about this issue.”

Seaford hospital campaign gathers momentum

On Friday 7 July a lively meeting regarding the campaign for a hospital in Seaford was held at the home of Cllr Jon Freeman. About 30 people heard Jon and local health campaigner Don Hart describe the campaign to get better health facilities in Seaford. Those present pledged their support for the campaign and agreed to seek further signatures for the petition.

Lib Dems start petition to get Seaford a hospital

Local Lib Dems and Norman Baker MP were on the streets of Seaford on Saturday 20th May gathering signatures for a new petition aimed at putting pressure on the authorities to give the town its own hospital.

Seaford County and Town Councillor, Jon Freeman, said, "The response from the public today has been fantastic. There is real frustration that this issue is not being taken seriously and we want to apply pressure to get some real progress for local people.

"We will continue to campaign on this issue and I think it may well be necessary to hold a public meeting to show the health big-wigs how strongly Seaford feels about this."

Local MP, Norman Baker, added, "A town the size of Seaford needs its own community hospital along the lines of Lewes Victoria. I put this precise issue to the House on 9th May and I will continue to pressure the government to provide adequate healthcare for such an important, growing town. I am today meeting the Chief Executive of Strategic Health Authority, Candy Morris, to push the case further.

"We will be asking local shops to display the petition and we will be taking it to people's doorsteps. It is also available to sign on our website."
