In July Lancashire County Council announced a revised fare structure for subsidised school bus services from September 2006. This resulted in a 100%+ increase in fares (min £1 single fare).

As predicted, we are already seeing a reduction in the use of school buses. Congestion on the roads has increased with the resulting increase in pollution as parents turn to their cars for the school journey.

Preston Liberal Democrat, Cllr. Mark Jewell said, "My concern is that we will see a decline in revenues leading to a decision to axe services. Using the buses is more environmetally friendly than taking the car and not everyone can walk to school safely."

This decision will be reviewed at the end of this year. Please sign the petition below and help our campaign to increase bus use for journeys to/from school.
To: Lancashire County Council: The recent increase in School Bus Fares is unaffordable to may families leading to increased car use and heightened safety concerns for children going to and from school. We, the undersigned, call upon Lancashire County Council to reverse this decision and provide a commitment to increasing bus use for journeys to school.
