The cutting edge work of the Astronomy Technology Centre at the Royal Observatory on Blackford Hill is under threat. Up to 60 jobs are at risk after the UK Government announced funding cuts to cutting edge science across the UK.

Lib Dem Westminster spokesperson Fred Mackintosh said, “these savage cuts highlight the disdain that the Labour government has shown for cutting edge research in the UK. If it doesn’t appear on an education league table, they don’t want to know.”

I/we call on the Department forInnovation, Universities and Skills to suspend the Science and Technology Research Council's delivery plan until a new way can be found to safeguard the long term future of the Astronomy Technology Cebtre and the skills and experience in the development, design and manufacture of high technology astronomical instruments.
