We the undersigned call on West Sussex County Council to reduce the speed limit on Clays Hill, Bramber from 40mph to 30 mph.
Clays Hill is fronted by residential properties for most of its length from the Bramber roundabout (which has a 30 mph limit) on the A283, to the junction with Maudlin Lane. Despite being a relatively short length of road, vehicles take the opportunity to speed well over 40 mph. This is highly dangerous for pedestrians using the pavement, those trying to cross the road to Clays Field, householders with entrances very close to the road and for people trying to exit from the adjacent residential service road.
In view of the Government considering reducing the national speed limit on single carriageway roads to 50 mph roads, in residential roads such as Clays Hill it should be reduced to a standard 30 mph (and 20 mph where supported by local residents).
A 30 mph speed limit has previously been requested for Clays Hill, but this has been rejected as not meeting the County criteria. This should now be reconsidered in view of the likely change in the national criteria.
To help the proposed 30 mph speed limit to be self-enforcing a pinch point should be constructed to provide a small pavement at the access point to Clays Hill.
