I/We the undersigned call on the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government to reject the appeal by Halls of Durham against Gateshead Council’s decision to refuse planning permission to opencast half a million tonnes of coal and fireclay from Skon’s Park, near Whickham and Rowlands Gill, in the Derwent Valley, Gateshead, for the following reasons:
- The damage that would be caused to the environment of the Derwent Valley;
- The danger from heavy lorries on the A692;
- The problem of noise and dust from the site
- The damage that would be caused to the growing tourism industry o the area;
- The burning of coal will add to global warming at a time when renewable energy supplies should be developed.
