We say that Mayor Boris and Transport for London must

- Keep your promise to replace bendy buses

- Bring back conductors on bendy buses immediately to cut crime, fare-dodging and make buses safer

- Stop wasting time designing a new routemaster; use modern double-deckers instead

Our original demand was that Mayor Ken stop any new bendy bus routes, then review the existing ones. In March 2008, he conceded.

In May, Mayor Boris was elected on a manifesto pledge to replace the bendy buses with a redesigned routemaster.

But now he's been elected, Boris says replacing the bendy buses is
just an aspiration, not a promise.

Our message to Boris: bendy buses have got to go!

Bendy buses are crime scenes on wheels
Figures obtained by London Liberal Democrats revealed that when bendy buses came in, theft on London buses went up by over 18% in just one year. RISE IN PICK POCKETING ON LONDON BUSES

Bendy buses are a gift to freeloaders
In 2006, Liberal Democrat research revealed that fare dodging on bendy buses is double the rate on other buses in London.
FARE EVASION STILL TWICE AS HIGH ON BENDY BUSES

Since then it’s got worse – three times as much fare dodging on bendy buses last year.
BUS FARE DODGERS COST TfL £1M A WEEK

In fact, last year an astonishing
7.2m people dodged the fare on bendy buses - equivalent to the entire London population!

Normal buses are just as quick
The Advertising Standards Agency has made TfL drop claims that boarding times were faster on bendy buses.
Bendy bus ads complaints upheld

Chaos on our streets
Islington residents are reporting more and more problems with the bendy buses

· Route 38 buses blocking the junction at Essex Road/St Paul's Road and stopping traffic, including other buses
· Route 73 buses blocking White Lion Street, causing traffic to back up into Pentonville Road
· Bus stops have to be suspended completely - not moved, during road works - because the bendy buses are too long
· Bendy buses are blocking 'normal' buses, causing chaos around our busy bus stops at Angel and on Essex Road.

Bendy buses are dangerous
Bendy buses are a
menace, a danger to cyclists and other road users, causing twice as many accidents as conventional buses.

Enough is enough. We want better bus services, but bendy buses just don't work on our crowded streets.

If you are being driven round the bend by bendy buses then sign up to support the No More Bendy Buses campaign.

We say that Mayor Boris and Transport for London should
  • Keep your promise to get rid of bendy buses
  • Bring back conductors on bendy buses to cut crime, fare-dodging and make buses safer
  • Stop wasting time designing a new bus – use modern double-deckers instead

"They are death traps and Ken should be dragged underneath one and see how he likes it"  RS, London SE13

"I want to see double deckers replace the bendy buses and bring back some English eccentricity back to our public transport system.  These bendies are just not British!"
AB, London N1

"As a cyclist in islington I feel these menaces should be taken from the roads. I understand the 'mothers with pushchairs' and 'disabled access' arguement. But surely at the very least normal buses could be as well as bendies on routes with more at rush hour?"  MJ, London N16

"Bendy buses represent just yet another mistake which Ken Livingstone is responsible for. They simply must be got rid of."
