Apart from the Midhurst site, which is in a built up area, the Shoreham Cement Works Site in Upper Beeding is the only site within the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) recommended for inclusion as a preferred site in the West Sussex County Council Preferred Option Draft of the Strategic Waste Site Allocations Development Plan Document.

I call on West Sussex County Council to exclude the Shoreham Cement Works Site, Upper Beeding, from the Preferred Option of the Strategic Waste Site Allocations Development Plan Document for the following reasons: -

No site within the AONB should be included in the Plan Document.

This Site has been blighted for years and a development is needed which will remove this scar on the landscape of the AONB, not add to it with a running sore of heavy waste lorry traffic going up/down the A283, already acknowledged to be one of the most dangerous roads in the South East of England.

The criteria for including the Site is misleading as it is not that close to the urban area; there is another recommended site which is within the urban area which, if developed, would enable the construction of the East Worthing Access Road to remove industrial traffic from the residential area of East Worthing.

The claimed proximity of existing waste management facilities is misleading in that the minor facility at the Site (concrete crushing) is on a temporary permission only, whilst the Horton Landfill Site at Small Dole, although due to close in April 2008 has only been extended to October 2010 (subject to the planning permission being implemented). The minor sites in the urban area more appropriately relate to the East Worthing Site
