Axe the Tax Contest Winner Announced

Today Tom Brake MP, Liberal Democrat MP for Carshalton and Wallington, announced the long awaited winner of the Axe the Tax Contest.  The contest was launched in June of this year to promote and raise awareness of the Liberal Democrats’ long-running Axe the Tax campaign which seeks to secure the abolition of the greatly unjust Council Tax, and replace it with a tax that reflects a person’s ability to pay, a Local Income Tax.

The contest winner was plucked from the entries submitted.  The winner, Mr T S Hogan, is unable to find employment due to a severe blood condition.  He receives absolutely no disability or unemployment benefit, but still pays the full Council Tax for his area of over £1100.   He is unable to receive any assistance because he has savings over the level of the savings disregard of £16.000.

The runner up for the contest is Mrs Barbara Fennessy, a pensioner who pays nearly a quarter of her pension in Council Tax, even after receiving single inhabitant relief.

Tom Brake MP commented, ‘These people are excellent examples of the inequality and unfairness that the council tax system is riddled with.  The Liberal Democrats want to reform the system.  We will scrap the dreaded Council Tax and replace it with a fairer Local Income Tax.  We will overhaul the entire tax system to make it fairer, greener, and simpler’
