Rose Cottage SAVED
Save Hasty Lane!
UPDATE -  January 2010

Manchester City Council approved a reduced plan to expand the airport without demolishing Rose Cottage. The rest of Hasty Lane, the meadow and newt pond to the south are still threatened.

Air freight has halved since 2007 so doubling the capacity doesn't make sense now.

Furthermore, a government commissioned study calculated that aviation emissions would contribute between 86% and 128% of the country's total CO2 budget by 2050, if allowed to expand in line with the 2003 Air Transport white paper.

Please sign our petition to the Prime Minister to tell us how we are to meet our Co2 targets whilst expanding aviation capacity such as Manchester Airport.

Rose Cottage is a stunning grade II listed 17th Century dwelling, beautifully maintained by the current tenants, a family of three. It, along with three other properties are situated on the historic "Hasty Lane" on the edge of Manchester Airport.

  • Nearby is a 300 year old natural pond hosting a colony of great crested newts.
  • It is surrounded by dozens of mature trees and beautifully preserved and balanced ecology.
  • It is an environmental and historical oasis in the midst of heavy modern industry.

The Airport plan to demolish the buildings, fell the trees and concrete over the pond to build two giant air freight cargo units.

English Heritage, the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, Greater Manchester Archaeological Unit, the Council for British Archaeology, local councillors and residents all oppose the plans.

We, the undersigned, wish to add our objection to these plans, and urge Manchester Planning and Highways Committee to reject this application.
