Cornwall has the potential to be a nuclear free zone, all we need do is grasp it.

The Prime Minister’s passive and misguided attitude to climate change alarms the Cornish Liberal Democrats.   The lack of immediacy exhibited in Tony Blair’s actions does not reflect the monumental crisis the world faces in climate change.  Running parallel to states in the USA and Australia, Cornwall can now break away from national policy and tackle climate change on a regional level.

It is the Prime Minister’s belief that salvation from climate change can be found in nuclear power. The Cornish Liberal Democrats believe the opposite. The crippling economic and environmental costs of nuclear power would shame any attempt of the UK in tackling climate change.  Cornwall has the opportunity shelter itself from this toxic future by utilising the renewable energy sources that surround it.

Cornwall has already embarked on its renewable energy campaign.  Trials for extracting wave power are imminent and wind farms are dotted all over the county.   The Cornish Liberal Democrats support these developments but believe these projects are too small and too slow to come to fruition.  Wave, wind and solar power should be harnessed at every opportunity, that is why we are calling for all new build houses in the county to be as energy efficient as possible and each house have its own source of renewable power (solar or wind).  Energy conservation, achieved by education schemes targeted at households and businesses, coupled with energy generation would create a Cornwall that is not reliant on an external (nuclear) power supply.

With demand and supply of renewable energy concentrated in Cornwall, the economic benefits will follow.  Ever increasing concerns over climate change will result in the renewable energy industry expanding at a rapid rate, if Cornwall acts now it could be at the centre of this growth.  The Cornish Liberal Democrats envisage renewable energy as Cornwall’s new industry.

By signing the petition below, you add your voice to the Cornish Liberal Democrats in opposing nuclear power and creating a county that does not rely on it.

We, the undersigned, oppose the building of any new nuclear power stations.
We believe that the future of the Cornish economy lies in renewable technologies including wave, tide, wind and solar power.
We support proposals to encourage building developers to include solar panels or mini wind turbines on all new buildings.
