It has emerged that from the 27th March the Northern Line will begin
20 months of weekend closures so that it can undergo upgrade work. The
company which is responsible for upgrading the Northern Line,
Tubelines, originally asked for shorter more targeted closures, but
their request was turned down by the Tory Mayor, Boris Johnson.

This plan will have a hugely detrimental effect on local businesses
and on the quality of life for local residents. The issue has been
used as a political football between a Tory Mayor and a Labour
Government, while the needs of Londoners are being ignored. The
Liberal Democrats have come up with an alternative ‘Five Point Plan’
for upgrading the Northern Line, which would minimise disruption and
ensure a fairer deal for Londoners.

I the undersigned, call on Mayor Boris Johnson and TfL to:

 1. Immediately suspend all upgrade plans for 3 to 4 months so that local residents and businesses can be fully consulted as part of a genuine review of the plans.

2. Replace months of early evening and weekend closures with short, sharp bursts of work on sections of the Northern Line, (blockades).

 3. Keep the Northern Line open when London Overground rail network or the Jubilee Line are closed for upgrading work.

4. Have express buses running on the closeds ections of the route. We would also ensure that detailed information, maps and staff are available to passengers to ensure they can get from A to B as quickly as possible, including offering nearby alternative transport methods as an option.

5. Ensure that TfL offers a fair compensation package, such as offering travelcard holders an extension on their travelcards for the amount of days that they were affected by closures.
